What to Look for in Wood Jointers

There are many things that can be made from wood. Wood is a beautiful material that offers many different types from which to choose. However, there are many different tools that must be used when working with wood. After all, wood is not as stable as stone, for example, as it expands and contracts with changes in moisture and temperature. Even so, wood is a very popular building and carving material. You just have to have the right tools. Wood jointers are an example of tools that can be very helpful for the amateur or pro woodworker.

Jointers are used to create edges and glue joints. The majority of today's jointers come complete with a rabbeting ledge built right into the table. This rabbeting edge is very handy as it helps you cut a ledge measuring up to 1/2 inch deep. This ledge could be used for recessed panes or decorative purposes. Many woodworkers send their wood through a jointer prior to paning because this can remove bows in the wood. One thing to remember when using a jointer is to keep the pressure from your hands steady or you'll end up with unwanted imperfections. The harder the pressure, the more may be cut off the wood. The lighter the pressure, the less may be cut off the wood. You want to find the proper balance to keep things accurate and even.

When shopping for a jointer, look for a model with dual table hand wheels. This makes light cuts a breeze and adjustments easy. As previously mentioned, make sure to choose a jointer that offers a rabbeting edge. The fence on your jointer should have the ability to tilt in for ultimate flexibility and ease of use. Speaking of the fence, always choose a center mounted joiner. The end mounted jointer is basically a dinosaur in the woodworking world and should not be used.

Wood jointers are simple machines but useful ones nonetheless. This type of machinery helps prepare wood for other purposes as it results in straight, parallel edges. By adjusting the fence on the jointer, you can create various effects and results on the wood. Before attempting to use your new jointer make sure you read the operator's manual in detail and have all the proper safety gear. Safety goggles to protect your eyes are an absolute must every time you're using any kind of wood shop tool.
