A Guide to Machinists Measuring Tools
In the world of woodworking and carpentry, measuring tools are extremely important. Accurate measurements are an absolute requirement in this field, which is why machinists measuring tools are so important. If you're new to the hobby of woodworking, all these tools might be a bit confusing. You may not know which ones you need and which ones you don't. You will find when you are shopping for measuring tools that they often come in handy kits that are ideal for beginners. Here are some of the tools you can expect to find in such a kit:
Rule / Ruler -- The rule, or ruler is the most basic yet the most necessary of all measuring tools. This tool can be basic or high tech, made from wood, plastic or metal. There are short and long rules for all types of jobs. There are even slide rules that extend to long lengths yet shorten for easy portability.
Micrometer -- The micrometer is a tool commonly used in engineering. It is used to measure the thickness of blocks to ultimate precision. You can also use this tool to measure the inner and outer dimensions of slots and shafts.
Dial Caliper -- A caliper is a tool used to either measure diameter or thickness and distance. You may hear this tool referred to in the plural tense as calipers. Dial calipers are commonly used by woodworkers and even come designed especially for the purpose of woodworking.
Combination Square Set -- The combination square set is a common sight in many woodworkers' shops. This type of set is often included in tool kits and is used to measure angles and providing a perfectly straight edge that is precisely measured to specifications.
Awl -- An awl is not necessarily in the category of measuring tools but is important none the same. This tool is used to punch holes or mark surfaces after measuring. These tools come in different sizes for various needs.
There are more machinists measuring tools, but the ones above represent the basics that most woodworkers will need. As mentioned earlier, there are handy kits which contain all these tools and more in a compact all-in-one carrying case. This makes it easy to get the tools you need for precise measurements. And as every good woodworker knows, precise measurements are a must for successful projects.
